Barre Town Middle and Elementary School is a school located in Barre (town), Vermont, USA and is more commonly known as BTMES or Barre Town School. The school is a K-8 school, also with a pre-school program, and has around 1,000 pupils. There are two principals; Jennifer W. Nye who supervises mainly K-4 (Dr. Theodore Riggen retired in 2009), and Timothy Crowley who mainly takes care of grades 5-8.〔("Barre Town Elementary School" ), Great Schools〕 Crowley was one of only six principals to feature in the '2006 National Distinguished Principals' awards.〔("2006 National Distinguished Principals" ), National Association of Elementary School Principals〕 In December 2005, two pupils from the school were killed in a fire, the third time in three years that students had lost their lives in an accident.〔("Barre fire kills five" ), The Barre Montpelier Times Argus, December 18, 2005〕 Tests results released in February 2007 detailed that students at Barre Town performed above and, in one case, well above the state averages. On the writing test 60 percent of Barre Town students were proficient or better — 11 percentage points above the statewide average.〔("Central Vermont educators both 'frustrated, pleased' by test scores" ), The Barre Montpelier Times Argus, February 8, 2007〕 The noted Scholastic company reported that Kindergarten students at Barre Town spent six weeks experimenting with force and motion in the school’s science lab, which is unusual at that age.〔("What's Up at School - Science Discoveries" ), Scholastic.com, June 1, 2005〕 ==References== 〔
